Model Overview

The Mazda 2 is an entry-level B-segment hatchback from Mazda, which was long marketed as the "Demio" in the Japanese domestic market. The lineage of this model line traces back to the Mazda 121 in 1987 before officially adopting the Mazda 2 nameplate in 1996 to serve as the entry-level offering in the Mazda lineup. In 2007, the third-generation Mazda 2 was locally produced and introduced by Changan Mazda, with a price range between RM75,800 and RM101,800. As a global strategic model, the Mazda 2 has clinched over 52 international accolades, including the "2008 World Car of the Year". However, amid persistently sluggish sales, the model was officially discontinued in the domestic market in 2015. Currently, the fourth-generation Mazda 2 continues to receive updates and remains on sale in overseas markets.

Design Language

The design language of the Mazda 2 has evolved across four generations. The first generation (1996) blended 5-door hatchback and compact MPV styling cues with a high-roof profile. The second generation (2002) shifted closer to a conventional 5-door hatchback, introducing the brand's signature pentagonal front grille.

The third-generation model launched in 2007 marked a major design leap, embracing Mazda’s "Zoom-Zoom" philosophy alongside a "compact and dynamic" theme, featuring sharp character lines and a wedge-shaped profile to create an athletic stance. Body dimensions measure 3,905 mm in length, 1,695 mm in width, and 1,480 mm in height, with a 2,490 mm wheelbase.

Introduced in 2014, the fourth-generation model fully embraced the "KODO: Soul of Motion" design language and SKYACTIV technology, highlighted by the signature Kodo wing grille up front and an overall more upmarket aesthetic. Subsequent facelifts in 2019 and 2023 further refined the exterior, offering up to 12 body colours and custom accessory packages.

Powertrain Performance

The locally produced third-generation Mazda 2 is powered by 1.3L and 1.5L MZR naturally aspirated engines. The 1.3L engine delivers a maximum power of 63 kW (86 hp) and 123 Nm of peak torque, while the 1.5L powerplant produces 76 kW (103 hp) and 138 Nm. It is paired with either a 5-speed manual or a 4-speed automatic transmission driving the front wheels. Combined fuel consumption is rated at approximately 4.9 to 6.1 L/100 km.

The overseas fourth-generation Mazda 2 is powered by a 1.5L Skyactiv-G petrol engine, with select markets also offering a 1.5L Skyactiv-D diesel unit as well as a 24V mild-hybrid version. Transmission options include a 6-speed manual and a 6-speed automatic, with all-wheel drive (AWD) available as an option. The 2023 Japanese-spec iteration churns out a maximum output of 110 hp.

Chassis and Handling

The Mazda 2 employs a front-engine, front-wheel-drive (FWD) layout. The third-generation model rides on front MacPherson struts and a rear H-beam torsion beam suspension setup, boasting a tight turning radius of just 9.4 metres for nimble handling. Domestically built models come standard with Electric Power Assisted Steering (EPAS). The fourth-generation model introduces G-Vectoring Control Plus (GVC+), which subtly modulates engine torque and applies light brake force to enhance cornering stability, delivering Mazda's signature "Jinba-Ittai" (horse and rider as one) driving dynamics.

Cabin and Features

The Mazda 2 features a 5-seater layout, with the locally assembled third-gen model offering a 250-litre boot capacity alongside 60:40 split-folding rear seats. The fourth-generation overseas model is equipped with an 8-inch freestanding infotainment display supporting Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity. In terms of creature comforts, high-spec overseas variants offer a leather-wrapped steering wheel, automatic climate control, heated front seats, and more. On the safety front, overseas models come standard with active safety systems including Smart City Brake Support - Forward (SCBS-F), Smart City Brake Support - Reverse (SCBS-R), and Lane Departure Warning System (LDWS).

Market Performance and Evaluation

The journey of the Mazda 2 in the Chinese market remains a story of what could have been. Following its local production rollout in 2007, despite earning a solid reputation for its dynamic styling and engaging handling, the entry 1.3L variant felt underpowered and struggled to gain market traction against formidable rivals such as the Honda Fit and Volkswagen Polo. By 2012, annual sales had dwindled to fewer than 2,000 units, eventually leading to its discontinuation in 2015. Meanwhile, the overseas fourth-generation model continues to receive updates; following its second facelift in 2023, it is priced in the Japanese market from approximately 1,529,000 JPY to 2,541,000 JPY (around RM79,500 to RM132,000), offering a wide array of personalisation options. However, given the shrinking subcompact hatchback segment and shifting brand strategies in China, a local comeback remains unlikely. Although the Mazda 2 has bowed out of the Chinese market, the "Zoom-Zoom" driving pleasure it delivered remains a fond memory for many driving enthusiasts.
